Our Hands-On Review Of The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic – Reversible Car Seat
The Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic car seat lives up to the expectations users have of Peg Perego, after the original Primo Viaggio Convertible Car Seat fell a little short. The biggest differences between the newer Primo Viaggio Kinetic Convertible Car Seat and the older Primo Viaggio Convertible Car Seat are:
- Primo Viaggio Kinetic Convertible includes an anti-rebound bar.
- Primo Viaggio Kinetic Convertible includes kinetic pods.
- Primo Viaggio Kinetic Convertible includes a cup holder.
In addition to the newer version having additional safety features and better crash test results, the newer version is easier to install and utilize everyday. Plus it is a little comfier and includes additional cushion inserts.
The additional safety features offered in the newer Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic Car Seat are more than we have seen in any other convertible car seat, providing this seat with some of the best safety test results, which is why it is our pick for the Safest Convertible Car Seat of 2024.
The Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic car seat has only two different configurations: front-facing and rear-facing. Other convertible car seat competitors have up to four configurations, such as the Graco 4Ever DLX 4-in-1 Baby Car Seat which can be transformed into a forward-facing, rear-facing, booster with a back, or backless booster car seat.
Convertible car seats are typically heavier than infant carrier car seats, and aren’t typically taken from your vehicle or used to transport your little one. This means they don’t include a base and aren’t typically compatible with strollers, but on the plus side they are built to grow with your little one and can be used for much longer.
If you prefer an infant seat that is easier to move around and includes a base, you can check out our picks for the Best Infant Car Seats of 2024!

Safety and Sturdiness: 10/10
My favorite thing about the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic – Reversible Car Seat is the incredible safety features. It includes standard features we love to see such as a top tether hook that increases stability in forward-facing mode, easy-to-pull LATCH connectors, and a standard 5-point harness made from extra-strong polyester thread with shoulder pads.
The Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic has some additional safety features that really kick the safety competition up a notch.
- Anti-Rebound Bar (ARB) – protects baby by minimizing forces and reducing rotation in case of front or rear collision. The ARB is integrated and stowable, tucking under the seat when not in use. An anti-rebound bar spacer is also included to provide an additional 2 inches (5 cm) of legroom.
- Kinetic Pod System – help to divert forces away from your child in case of a side collision.
- Side Impact Protection (SIP) – three layers of protection which also adjust when you change the height.
- Energy-Absorbing Foam – made from Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and Expanded Polypropylene (EPP), this foam lines the car seat providing increased protection and comfort throughout the shell and headrest.
- Contoured Steel Back Plate – minimizes flexing and reduces forward movement upon impact.
- Tri-Stage Cushion – included for comfort and support of a newborn’s neck and spine.
Ease of Use: 9/10
Installing the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic was a breeze, thanks to the clear instructions. I didn’t love that the level indicator is just a line on a decal which should be parallel to the ground, but I probably won’t use it often since the seat is heavy and I’m not planning on moving it around.
I also feel that the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic’s 5-point harness chest clip is a little harder to unclip than other convertible car seats, like the Britax One4Life or the Graco 4Ever DLX.
At first I didn’t love the recline of the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic, but then I figured out that you need to use both hands for it to recline: one hand pulls the lever at the front of the seat while the other tilts the top of seat, pulling it forward or pushing it back.
I love Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic car seat’s adjustable no-rethread harness which works even with a child in the seat. It has 10 positions which adjust the height/length of the harness & headrest so it grows with your child (positions 1-7 for rear-facing, 8-10 for forward-facing).
I also love that the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic includes elastic loops on the outsides of the seat to hold the harness open — super helpful when putting my little one in so I don’t have to fish under her bum for the harness.
There are two different ways to install the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic car seat, and each one utilizes either the seat belt or the latch straps (latch straps aren’t good for over 45 lbs). Installing the Peg Perego using a seat belt was easier forward-facing than rear-facing, and when it is forward-facing there is a seat belt latch lock on both sides (seat belt side holds lap belt, buckle side holds lap belt and shoulder strap).
Using the LATCH straps in either front or rear-facing mode may require moving the straps to the front or back. It is worth noting that the base of the car seat may be wider than the LATCH connectors in your car, making it a little trickier to install using LATCH.
I prefer the seat belt path personally, but like I said before, it is a little tricky rear-facing. But when using the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic car seat in rear-facing mode, you can use the Anti-Rebound Bar. Just swing it from under the car seat and detach the ARB Spacer (seat needs to be in upright position). Putting the ARB spacer on is also a little tricky — but we found pushing the larger side in lets you more easily slide the holes into place.
Durability and Quality: 9/10
From the moment I unboxed the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic, I could tell that it was made with high-quality materials. The construction feels very solid, the fabric is soft and durable, and the leatherette border is very nice. The head panel is made with a fresco jersey fabric, providing great breathability to keep your child comfortable.
Plus the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic cover is machine washable (maximum of 90°F/30°C with a delicate wash setting and short spin cycle) and the leatherette easily wipes off. The 5-point harness can also be wiped off and is made from strong polyester thread.
Comfort: 8/10
My toddler seemed to find the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic quite comfortable, thanks to the plush padding and multiple height positions. The only reason I didn’t give it a perfect score in this category is that the fabric can get a bit warm on hot days, but this is a common issue with many car seats.
The Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic car seat includes a removable infant insert that is actually 3 separate pieces that snap together:
- Removable headrest cushion
- Removable back cushion
- Removable bum cushion
I love that they are separate pieces, providing comfort and support of a newborn’s neck and bottom, while also allowing me remove them at different times. For example, it feels like the headrest cushion isn’t as padded as the back rest, so her head falls back, and the crotch buckle has only one position and the belly cover on that lock is not removable, so I can foresee needing to move padding in those areas soon.
The Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic car seat does have 10 height positions that can easily be adjusted, even with a child in the seat. The 5-point harness easily tightens and loosens with zero rethreading, and the harness has shoulder pads for comfort. Plus, the Anti-Rebound Bar Spacer provides an additional 2 inches of legroom for your little one in the rear-facing position.
Weight and Bulkiness: 8/10
At around 25 pounds, the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic is definitely on the heavier side for a car seat. It’s also fairly bulky and 18.75 inches / 47.625 cm in width, which could be a concern if you have a smaller vehicle or need to fit multiple car seats in one row. However, I feel that the added safety features and overall quality make the extra weight and bulk worthwhile.
Product Dimensions:
- Seat Weight: 24.4 lbs (11.1 kg)
- Product Height: 25.75 inches (65.405 cm)
- Product Width: 18.75 inches (47.625 cm)
Flexibility: 8/10
One of the biggest selling points of the Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic is its ability to grow with your child. The adjustable 10 position headrest and no-rethread harness make it easy to customize the fit as your little one grows. It can be used rear-facing, for infants from 5-45 pounds, and forward-facing, for toddlers from 22-65 pounds.
- Rear-Facing Weight Range: 5 pounds (2.3kg) – 45 pounds (20.4kg)
- Forward-Facing Weight Range: 22 pounds (10 kg) – 65 pounds (29.5kg)
- Overall Weight Range: 5 Pounds (2.3kg) – 65 Pounds (29.5kg)
When used in rear-facing mode, the the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic car seat can be used with the included infant insert and is suitable for newborns from 5 lbs (2.3kg) on up. And with the anti-rebound bar spacer you get an additional 2 inches of legroom in rear-facing mode.
Unlike the original Peg Perego Convertible car seat, the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic car seat comes with a cup holder that clips onto the outside frame of the car seat and can easily be removed for cleaning.
Design: 9/10
The Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic has a sleek, modern design that looks great in any vehicle. The fabric options are stylish and come in four different styles and colors. We tested out the Licorice option, which has a nice looking leatherette that is easy to wipe clean.
But I also love the Merino Wool option which is a natural fiber that is chemical free and flame retardant. And the Wonder Grey has a stain resistant nanotechnological fabric that is easy to clean and breathable.
I love how clean the back of the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic car seat looks, it doesn’t expose straps or metal, and has storage for the top tether, ARB spacer, and even the user manual.
Price: 8/10
There’s no denying that the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible Kinetic is one of the pricier options on the market. However, when you consider the advanced safety features, high-quality materials, and long-term usability, I believe it offers good value for the money. If you’re looking for the safest convertible car seat, the Peg Perego Convertible Kinetic is worth the investment.
