Our Verdict on the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Car Seat
The Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 is an excellent infant car seat. It scored well in our review and the price is right.
The Mico Max 30 shines particularly thanks to its installation easiness (see below), the anti-rebound bar on its base for added safety, its oversized canopy, the quality of the seat’s fabric, and the number of colors available to customize its look. We love that!
While it’s a good all-around car seat, we would mostly recommend it to parents who already have a compatible stroller with Maxi-Cosi.
Why?
Because for nearly the same price you can get the Chicco KeyFit 30 that performs overall slightly better in every category of our tests.
But don’t take our word for it, read our review to see if the Mico Max 30 is the right infant car seat for your family.
Our Rating: 9.6 / 10
Summary
We like:
- Very easy to install.
- Anti-rebound technology increase the safety of its base.
- Generous canopy to cover baby.
- Compatible with many stroller brands with and without adapters.
- 10 different color combinations to choose from.
- Light and easy to carry around.
We don’t like:
- Only the American seat belt fastening is possible without the base.

- Lacks a recline angle indicator on the base.
Who is it for:
The Mico Max 30 is perfect if you already have a stroller from one of the compatible brands (Maxi-Cosi, but also Cybex, Nuna, Silver Cross, and Quinny).
Where to buy it: check price on Amazon
Alternatives:
- The Chicco KeyFit 30: the best infant car seat of the year for the same price than the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 (check price). You should only pick the Mico Max 30 over the KeyFit30 if you already have a compatible stroller with Maxi-Cosi.
- The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio: the best infant car seat if you can stretch your budget. It comes with a European seat belt lock when used without its base. Perfect if you’re often taking taxis or Ubers (check price).
- The Evenflo LiteMax 35: if you’re looking for a less expensive alternative. In addition, it is one of the lighter weight options (check price).

Our Hands-on Review of the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Car Seat
It’s easy to fall in love with the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30. It comes with all the right features, you can customize its look and the price is reasonable.
You’ll have no problem using it with your baby from the very first day thanks to the cushy and cozy infant insert. And it will stay with you until your baby reaches 32” (80 cm, or about 15 months old).
The Mico Max 30 performed very well in our tests. It’s a significant upgrade from Maxi-Cosi’s previous infant seat (that was already very good). The latest model comes with the addition of an anti-rebound bar in its base and improved side-impact protection (what the brand calls Air Protect technology) for added safety.
But it’s hard to fully recommend the Mico Max 30. And that’s because for a similar same price, you can get the best infant car seat that we reviewed: the Chicco KeyFit 30. You won’t be disappointed if you get the Maxi-Cosi, but the Chicco infant car seat is just an overall slightly better package.
That said, I would absolutely recommend the Mico Max 30 if you already have a stroller compatible with the seat. Maxi-Cosi is a popular and well-known brand with a few excellent strollers of its own. Many other stroller manufacturers also provide adapters to Maxi-Cosi seats. If that’s the case for you, you should get the Mico Max 30 with no hesitation.
Mico Max 30 Safety Ratings and Crash Test Results
Just like every other car seat sold in the US, the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 meets the Federal safety standards and even more. It’s also approved by the FAA to be used inside an airplane.
The latest update of the Mico Max 30 comes with the addition of two interesting features that improve the safety of the seat: an anti-rebound bar in its base and more side protection for your baby’s head.
The anti-rebound bar on the base is a piece near the foot of the car seat base, where it connects with the back of your car seat. An anti-rebound bar helps reduce or prevent rebound movement. Because your baby’s head will not be braced against the seat of your car in a rear-facing position, the infant car seat risks bouncing up and down in case of an accident. Note that the Mico Max 30 comes bundled with the car seat if you purchase it on Amazon here.
While rear-facing car seats have proven to be safer than forward-facing seats, the bouncing movement can cause injury. Reducing that bouncing movement with the anti-rebound bar is thus an extra safety. It’s not required by Federal standards in the U.S., but we like every extra level of protection that manufacturers can add to their infant car seats!
The Mico Max also adds extra side-impact protection. The Maxi-Cosi marketing department calls this Air Protect Side Impact Protection. We just call it a more cosy side protection. It comes down to extra thick protection surrounding the head of your baby. It uses EPP foam, which is proven to be more durable than EPS foam.
Helpful Note
We use the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ratings and crash test data under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard to determine each car seat safety ratings in our reviews.

How Comfortable is the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30?
It’s very comfortable for babies of all shapes and sizes. There is plenty of extra padding to make this seat very comfortable for your child. The area around the neck and head received extra attention in that regard. The infant insert is also very soft and cozy. It’s perfect for preemies and small babies from 4 lbs (2 kg).
We really like the fabric in the Mico Max 30. It’s made from a special material that helps regulate moisture and wetness to keep your baby dry and comfy in the seat. Other car seats in our tests caused our child to rapidly feel too warm because of the non-breathable material.
Maxi-Cosi calls this self-wicking fabric. We just call it a great little trick.
The extra-large canopy of the Mico Max 30 also deserves kudos. It can extend to cover most of your baby and never gets in the way when using the handle to carry the seat around. Sounds simple enough, but this is an area where most of the other car seats in our tests felt short. There is a flip-out visor that can further extend the canopy’s coverage and keep your baby in the shade. And, of course, the canopy’s fabric provides UV rays protection.
The Mico Max harness is about average in terms of comfort. Nothing wrong with it. But nothing that makes it stand out in our tests either. It comes with four different height positions, so you can extend the belt as your baby grows. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy to adjust as a no-rethread harness (see how practical it is in the next section). There are also two crotch buckle positions and an easily adjustable forward-facing crotch strap belt.
How Practical is the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30?
Carrying the Mico Max around is slightly better than most of the other seats. It’s lighter than most of the other infant car seats that we tested. The contoured handle is very comfortable and designed specially to curve around your hip or leg (yay, no more bruising for you).
Of particular notice is the option to easily snap and lock the Maxi-Cosi onto shopping carts. You should never place an infant car seat at the top of a shopping cart. But you can lock the Mico Max 30 inside your shopping cart to avoid movements when you walk. You can then easily unlock the seat with the same release button than you would normally use with the base in your car.
The bottom of the seat itself is a bit curvy, so you can gently rock your baby back and forth when the seat is placed on the ground. Perfect when you’re stopping for a quick bite outside.
As mentioned above, adjusting the harness on the Mico Max 30 isn’t as easy as it should be. There is no slider at the back of the seat to pull up or down the harness and adjust the height of the seat belt. Instead, you’ll need to reach to the back of the seat and pass the belt through the right slot for your baby. It’s not a big deal, but it’s a bit harder to estimate the right height as your baby won’t be sitting in the seat as your change the belt.
Here’s an instruction video explaining how to adjust the harness height on the Mico Max 30:
The Maxi-Cosi is approved by the FAA to be used inside a plane. The dimensions of the seat with its base are 31″ x 16″ x 18″ so you should be able to fit two Mico Max 30 side by side on your rear car seat if you want.
Installation Instructions
If you buy your Maxi-Cosi from Amazon here, it will come together with the Mico Max 30 base. We’ll review first how to safely install the car seat with the base, before talking about the installation without the base.
Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Installation with the Base
The Mico Max 30 is easy and straightforward to install with its base. It’s not quite as good as the Chicco KeyFit 30 but we like it nevertheless. Just follow these 5 simple steps:
- Place the Maxi-Cosi base on your car rear seat.
- Adjust the recline angle of the base appropriately.
- Attach the base with the LATCH connectors.
- Tighten the LATCH strap.
- That’s it. When done correctly, the base should move less than 1 inch from side to side.
If your car has the necessary LATCH anchors, we recommend that you use them instead of the seat belt to safely install the seat. Don’t try to use both systems at the same time though. The base isn’t built for it and it won’t make the installation safer.
We’re glad to say that the Mico Max 30 base is one of the easiest to install with the LATCH. It comes with handy little clips that safely lock into the anchors. You then just need to pull the LATCH belts to tighten them up as much as possible. The LATCH belts are easily accessible when you’re facing the base and can be tucked back in once the base is safely installed.
Helpful Note
LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. The LATCH system is mandatory for both car seat and vehicles built since 2002. LATCH greatly facilitate the safe installation of a car seat and should be preferred over other installation methods.
Learn more about how to securely install your baby in a car seat.
There are three reclining positions in the base to help you adjust the seat parallel to the road. You’ll find the lever to change the recline position on the back of the base.
Here’s an instruction video from Maxi-Cosi that illustrates the whole process:
We also love that the anchors are very easy to detach from the LATCH when you want to take off the base. Some of the other infant car seats that we’ve tested were absolutely terrible in that regard.
Once the base is safely installed, you just need to clip the car seat in it. You’ll hear a clicking sound to tell you that it’s correctly installed, but you should try to pull it out to make sure that it stays in.
When you’re done, you can easily detach the car seat by pressing the release button at the back of the seat.
So overall, we really like the Mico Max installation with its base. It’s one of the best ones that we’ve tested.
You can purchase the base separately from Amazon if you want. It also comes in white if you prefer that color. An extra base is very handy if you often use the seat in two vehicles so you don’t need to reinstall it each time your baby changes car.
Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Installation without the Base Using the Seat Belt
If you’re taking a taxi or an airplane, you also have the option to attach the Mico Max 30 without its base, using just a seat belt. It’s not as quick and easy as clipping the seat on a pre-installed base, but it’s not very complicated and still complies with all the safety regulations.
The Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 does not come with a European belt path. That means that you’ll need to pass your car seat belt only through the front of the seat. The European belt path provides an extra level of safety by also attaching to the back of the seat, so it’s our preferred method, but only one infant car seats in our tests had that option (the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio).
Helpful Note
Read our guide on how to securely install your baby in a car seat to understand the American belt routing method versus the European belt routing method.
We prefer the European method as it adds an extra connection at the back of the seat, but it isn’t required by the NHTSA in the U.S. at the moment.
Follow these 6 steps to attach the Mico Max 30 without the base:
- Place the infant car seat rear-facing in your car.
- Recline the seat appropriately by following the level line indicator on the side of the carrier. You might need to place a towel between the car seat and your car to achieve the right position.
- Pass the seat belt through the belt path on both sides of the seat and fasten it.
- Pull the seat belt as tight as you can then lock it in (depending on your car’s model, you might have to fully extend the seat belt or give it a sharp pull to trigger the locking mechanism).
- Feed as much of the seat belt back as possible to keep it very tight.
- That’s it. When done correctly, the infant car seat should move less than 1 inch from side to side.
Here’s an instruction video showing exactly how to install the KeyFit safely without its base:
Installing the Mico Max 30 without its base is very easy. Passing the seat belt through the belt path is quick and straightforward. And it was simple to find the right angle position with a towel between the seat and the car.
Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Weight Limit
The Mico Max 30 has a weight limit of 30 lbs (13.5 kg). It’s below most of the other infant car seats that we tested (except the Chicco KeyFit 30 that has the exact same limits) but it doesn’t really matter because your child will most probably reach the height limit before they reach the weight limit.
The height limit of the Mico Max 30 is 32 inches (80cm), just like most of the other seats in our tests.
On average, children weight about 24 lbs by the time they’ve reached 32 inches. That’s usually around 15 months old.
When Can I Remove the Maxi-Cosi Infant Insert?
The Mico Max 30 that’s sold here on Amazon comes bundled with an infant insert. The insert is an extra layer of cushion protection for babies who weigh between 4 and 5 lbs (1.8 kg to 2.3 kg). Depending on how fast your baby grows, you might need to keep the infant insert until they reach 6 lbs (2.7 kg).
Premature babies, in particular, might need to keep the insert for a little longer until they reach the weight limit. But some full-term newborns don’t even need it if they are already above 5-6 lbs.
As a rule of thumb, just make sure that your baby is both securely fasten and comfortable with enough room once installed in the seat.
In addition to the infant insert, the Maxi-Cosi also includes covers for both the buckle and the harness strap to protect your baby.
Maintenance and Washing Instructions
The more time your baby spends in the seat, the more often you’ll need to clean it up. That’s why we think that maintenance is a very important factor to consider when buying an infant car seat. If you can’t easily take off the cover to wash it, it will become an ongoing annoyance after a month or two.
And here again, the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 is excellent. The cover’s fabric and the headrest pad are easy to take off and put back. And they are both machine washable and dryer safe.
The harness covers, however, must be washed and dried by hand to avoid damaging the velcro.
We particularly like how easy it is to remove the cover. You don’t even need to unthread the harness, so there is no need to re-adjust the seat belt after washing the cover.
Note for the Premium Rachel Zoe Mico Max Seat
There is a special edition of the Maxi-Cosi designed in collaboration with Rachel Zoe that comes with different cover styles. The special edition looks great, but we don’t recommend that you get the brown leather and white cover. It will stain more easily and is not machine washable.
What Colors are Available?
If you like color options, you’re in for a treat with Maxi-Cosi. Eleven different color combinations are available for the Mico Max 30! They range from all black to classy navy blue and popping pink berry. You’ll be sure to find something that fits your car:
Which Strollers are Compatible with the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30?
Stroller compatibility is another area where the Mico Max 30 shines. Maxi-Cosi is a well-established trusted brand, so you’ll be able to use the car seat with most of the big stroller brands. Of all the infant car seats that we tested, the Mico Max is one of the most versatile. You can use it with more than 50 different stroller models (see the full list below)!
First off, the Mico Max 30 is compatible with all the Maxi-Cosi and Quinny strollers. It’s very easy to use. You just need to place the car seat on the stroller and it will safely clip itself on it. Just press the detach lever at the back of the seam to remove the seat from the stroller (the same way you would do to detach the seat from its base in your car).
If you don’t already have a stroller, we recommend that you get one of their a bundle on Amazon to save money.
The excellent Maxi-Cosi Adorra Modular 5-in-1 Travel System is our preferred option. It comes together with the Mico Max 30 Infant Car Seat and you can choose between 3 beautiful colors.
If you want something more bareback, Maxi-Cosi also offers a simple yet robust stroller frame called Maxi-Cosi taxi that’s compatible with the Mico Max 30. It’s perfect if you often hop on and off taxis.
When it comes to other brands, you’ll just need to get the necessary adapter to pair the Mico Max 30 with your stroller. It can be tricky to find the adapter that’s right for your car seat, but we’ve done all the legwork for you.

Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30: Accessories
The Mico Max 30 has a range of accessories from Maxi-Cosi and third parties:
First off, if you have more than one car and expect to regularly move the seat from one to the other, you might want to get an extra base. You can get the extra base on Amazon.
