Our Verdict on the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat
If you’re an urban parent, often popping in and out of taxis, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4/35 might be the best car seat for you. It’s one of the lightest in our tests and has a European seat belt path, two features that are very important if you are often using an infant car seat in a taxi or Uber.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is comfortable for baby while scoring very well on all safety tests. It feels sturdy and well built, as you might expect for the price.
Because indeed, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is also one of the most expensive infant car seats that we’ve tested, selling for the same price than the UPPABaby MESA. That’s about $150 more than the best-selling Chicco KeyFit 30.
Is it worth the extra money? It depends on your lifestyle. If you have a car and will mostly be using your car seat with a base, we think that the Chicco KeyFit 30 is a better value and the UPPABaby MESA is a better premium option thanks to its soft natural fabric.
But if you don’t have a car and often travel in taxis or Ubers, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4/35 is worth the extra money.
Keep reading to find out if it makes sense for you.
Our Rating: 9.8 / 10

Our Hands-on Review of the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat
You can tell immediately when taking the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio out of the box that it’s a premium quality built infant car seat. It’s designed and manufactured in Italy and comes with the style and attention to detail that you might expect.
The canopy, for example, is the biggest one that we’ve seen and comes with special ventilation areas on the side. That level of quality is apparent throughout every aspect of the seat and makes it a real joy to use on a day to day basis.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio also shines with its excellent safety features. Its base is sturdy and won’t budge once installed thanks to a few well-thought features (see below). And when used without the base, you can use the handlebar as an anti-rebound mechanism. It’s so simple and effective that we wonder why no other infant car seat manufacturer does that at the moment.
Overall, we really like the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4/35. It feels and looks premium. It’s very safe and comfortable. And it’s not as heavy as some other seats.
Helpful note
We found the best price for the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio on Amazon but recent buyers complained about receiving models that are two or three years old. The car seat hasn’t changed over that period of time, but older models will expire more rapidly. So you should make sure to request a newer model when buying your car seat.
You can read our guide on why infant car seats expire to understand why it’s important to pay attention to the expiry date.
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Safety Ratings and Crash Test Results
Every car seat sold in the U.S. meets the minimum Federal safety standards. BUT, it won’t help you if your car seat isn’t installed properly. It’s unfortunate, but we’ve seen too many parents install their infant seat incorrectly, thus putting their child at risk in case of an accident.
Often times, parents install their car seat improperly because they can’t tell precisely if it’s at the right angle with the road.
The Peg Perego helps you address that problem easily. Just like the Chicco KeyFit 30, the Primo Viaggio comes with a smart car seat base.
The Primo Viaggio base, that comes bundled with the car seat if you purchase it on Amazon here, has a few special features that will help you safely secure it to your car every time.
It starts with the inclination level indicator. You’ll see at the front of the base a large level indicator to help you see exactly what the proper installation angle should be depending on your child’s weight. You can set the inclination of the base by rotating the level adjustment knob.
It’s simple but very effective. We wish all the other infant car seat manufacturers would include something similar on their own base.
In addition, the Primo Viaggio base also comes with a retractable LATCH system to easily attach the seat to your car. And if you prefer to use the seat belt instead, you can securely tie it using the built-in lock. It’s one of the easiest and most robust systems that we’ve seen.
It’s as simple as that! These two simple features help you make sure that the Primo Viaggio base is correctly installed every time. No need to think twice or worry about it.
In addition to the base, the Primo Viaggio also comes with an excellent three-point harness and a five-position no-rethread adjustable headrest to safely and comfortably strap your baby in.
The seat itself is also filled with energy-absorbing foam to protect your baby in case of an accident. It also makes for a more comfortable ride.
In terms of crash test results, Peg Perego Primo Viaggio performed very well. It gives excellent protection in case of an accident. The seat provides significantly better protection than what is required by the Federal safety standards. You can adjust the side impact protection to six different positions to fit your baby’s size.
Helpful note
We use the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ratings and crash test data under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard to determine each car seat safety rating in our reviews.

How Comfortable is the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio for a Baby?
If you expect your baby to spend a lot of time in your car, the seat has to be comfortable. Otherwise, it’s going to be a bad experience for your baby and everyone else sitting in your car. We’ve been there!
In terms of comfort, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is excellent. My son easily falls asleep every time we strap him in (as long as he’s been sufficiently fed before taking off :).
The seat is comfortable thanks to a better sitting position, the breathable fabric, and the quality of the protective padding.
First, the sitting position in the Peg Perego seems to be slightly higher and with better back support than some other seats. Some seats are just too shallow, causing your baby to be sitting very deep inside the seat and in an uncomfortable position. This isn’t the case with the Primo Viaggio.
Second, the quality of the fabric is very good. You can tell that Peg Perego has experience creating materials that are soft to the touch and very breathable. The fabric on some cheaper infant car seats is sometimes a bit rough due to the fire retardant chemicals that are used to meet safety standards. Peg Perego managed to meet those same safety standards without using such a harsh fabric, making it much more pleasant for your baby. It also absorbs moisture to keep your baby cool and dry.
Finally, the protective padding on the sides and the back are just right. They are firm enough to protect your child in case of an accident. But also soft enough to be comfortable and cozy.
Overall, it feels like Peg Perego put off a lot of thoughts in designing and manufacturing the Primo Viaggio.
How Practical is the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio?
The weight of an infant car seat isn’t the most important factor to consider when selecting your seat, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you expect to have to carry it around often. And in that regard, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio does well at 9.5 lbs (4.31kg). It’s lighter than the UPPABaby MESA (the other premium infant car seat that we tested) but heavier than the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 (8.9 lbs, 4 kg).
If you plan on carrying your baby in the car seat often, we think it’s a viable option.
That said, the Primo Viaggio’s handle is a bit too close to the canopy for comfort if you want to pass your arm through it.
The bottom of the seat is a bit curvy, so you can gently rock your baby back and forth when the seat is placed on the ground. Perfect when you’re stopping for a quick bite outside.
As mentioned above, adjusting the harness on the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is very easy. There is a slider at the back of the seat to pull up or down the harness and adjust the height of the seat belt. So it’s easy to set it up just right with your baby installed in the seat.
Here’s a video explaining how to adjust the harness height on the Peg Perego. This is for an older version of the Primo Viaggio but the latest 4/35 seat functions the same way:
One area where we think Peg Perego should do better, however, is in terms of stroller compatibility. The Prima Viaggio is only compatible with about half of the most popular strollers on the market. It’s better than the UPPABaby MESA but not as good as the Chicco KeyFit 30 or the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30.
Check our section below on stroller compatibility to see if your stroller will work with the Prima Viaggio.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is approved by the FAA to be used inside an airplane. Note that this is only for the seat alone, the base is not FAA approved.
Installation Instructions
If you buy your Primo Viaggio from Amazon here, it will come together with the Peg Perego base. We’ll review first how to safely install the car seat with the base, before talking about the installation without the base.
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Installation with the Base
The Primo Viaggio is one of the best infant car seats to install with a base. Just follow these 5 simple steps:
- Place the Peg Perego base on your car rear seat.
- Adjust the recline angle of the base appropriately by following the level line indicator at the front of the base.
- Attach the base with the LATCH connectors.
- Tighten the LATCH strap.
- That’s it. When done correctly, the base should move less than 1 inch from side to side.
The Primo Viaggio base comes with standard LATCH anchors but you can also attach it with your seat belt if your car doesn’t have the LATCH system. The base comes with self-ratcheting LATCH connectors fold neatly into the base when not in use. You can simply release them with a button on the side.
Helpful note
LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. The LATCH system is mandatory for both car seat and vehicles built since 2002. LATCH greatly facilitate the safe installation of a car seat and should be preferred over other installation methods.
Learn more about how to securely install your baby in a car seat.
If your car has the necessary LATCH anchors, we recommend that you use them instead of the seat belt to safely install the seat. Don’t try to use both systems at the same time though. The base isn’t built for it and it won’t make the installation safer.
We particularly like the handy little LATCH clips that safely lock into the anchors. The connectors have a hard shell buckle with a release button to easily detach them when needed. There is an audible click when the anchors connect. Once attached, the tension indicator window will tell you when the LATCH belt is sufficiently tightened.
Here’s the official instruction video from Peg Perego that illustrates the whole process:
We also love that the anchors are very easy to detach from the LATCH when you want to take off the base. Some of the other infant car seats that we tested were absolutely terrible in that regard.
Once the base is safely installed, you just need to clip the car seat in it. You’ll hear a clicking sound to tell you that it’s correctly installed, but you should try to pull it out to make sure that it stays in.
When you’re done, you can easily detach the car seat by pressing the release button at the back of the seat.
You can purchase the base separately from Amazon if you want. It’s very handy if you want to keep a base in two vehicles at the same time so you don’t need to reinstall it each time your baby changes car.
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Installation Without the Base Using the Seat Belt
If you’re taking a taxi or an airplane, you also have the option to attach the Primo Viaggio without its base, using just a seat belt. It’s not as quick and easy as clipping the seat on a pre-installed base, but it’s not very complicated and still complies with all the safety regulations.
One of our favorite features of the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is that it comes with a European belt path. That means that you can pass your car’s seat belt through the front and the back of the seat for added safety The European belt path provides an extra level of safety by also attaching to the back of the seat, so it’s our preferred method.
In addition, the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio also uses its handle as an anti-rebound bar, adding yet another level of safety in case of an accident.
These two features combined make the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio our preferred option if you plan on using the seat mostly without its base.
Helpful note
Read our guide on how to securely install your baby in a car seat to understand the American belt routing method versus the European belt routing method.
We prefer the European method as it adds an extra connection at the back of the seat, but it isn’t required by the NHTSA in the U.S. at the moment.
Follow these 7 steps to attach the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio without the base:
- Place the infant car seat rear-facing in your car.
- Adjust the handle to its forward position.
- Recline the seat appropriately by following the level line indicator on the side of the carrier. You might need to place a towel between the car seat and your car to achieve the right position.
- Pass the lap portion of the seat belt through the belt path on both sides of the seat.
- Pass the shoulder portion of the belt through the belt path at the back of the seat and fasten it.
- Pull the seat belt as tight as you can then lock it in (depending on your car’s model, you might have to fully extend the seat belt or give it a sharp pull to trigger the locking mechanism).
- That’s it. When done correctly, the infant car seat should move less than 1 inch from side to side.
Note that some cars don’t have a seat belt long enough to take advantage of the European path. If that’s the case, you can also just use the normal American path and only strap the lap portion of the belt.
Here’s an instruction video showing exactly how to install the Primo Viaggio safely without its base:
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Weight Limit
The Primo Viaggio 4/35 has a weight limit of 35 lbs (15.8 kg). It’s on par with most of the other infant car seats that we tested (except the Chicco KeyFit 30 that has a lower limit of 30 lbs) but it doesn’t really matter because your child will most probably reach the height limit before they reach the weight limit.
The height limit of the Primo Viaggio is 32 inches (80cm). That’s 2 inches longer than the KeyFit 30.
On average, children weight about 22 lbs by the time they’ve reached 30 inches. That’s usually around 14 months old.
The Primo Viaggio that’s sold here on Amazon comes bundled with an infant insert. The insert is an extra layer of cushion protection for babies who weigh between 4 and 11 lbs (1.8 kg to 5 kg).
The car seat has a headrest that is separated from the infant insert. So you can leave the headrest ever after removing the insert. We recommend that you keep the headrest until your baby’s shoulders reach the top harness position.
Premature babies, in particular, might need to keep the insert for a little longer until they reach the weight limit.
As a rule of thumb, just make sure that your baby is both securely fasten and comfortable with enough room once installed in the seat.
In addition to the infant insert, the Primo Viaggio also includes covers for both the buckle and the harness strap to protect your baby.
Maintenance and Washing Instructions
The more time your baby spends in the seat, the more often you’ll need to clean it up. That’s why we think that maintenance is a very important factor to consider when buying an infant car seat. If you can’t easily take off the cover to wash it, it will become an ongoing annoyance after a month or two.
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio is average in that regard. The cover’s fabric and the headrest pad are easy to take off and put back. But they are not machine washable, so you’ll have to clean it by hand to avoid damaging the material.
What Colors are Available?
Peg Perego is an Italian brand so you know that style is important to them. With the Prima Viaggio, you have 12 available colors to choose from!
- Onyx (deep black with white stitching)
- Paloma (light beige and black combination)
- Atmosphere (mostly black and dark grey)
- Cream (light beige)
- Escape (beige and red combination)
- Grey (light grey and black combination)
- Licorice (black)
- Mod Bluette (blue and black combination)
- Mod Red (red and black combination)
- Fleur (purple and black combination)
- Pois Grey (black and grey with circle patterns)
- Tulip (red and light grey combination)
Whichever color you choose for the Prima Viaggio, the seats all feature authentic Italian styling and stitching that I would expect from the interior of a high-end sports car.
And if you purchase your stroller from Peg Perego, you can match your infant car seat color to the stroller for a consistent style.
We particularly like the Mon Amour car seat and stroller combo.
Which Strollers are Compatible with the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio?
Strollers’ compatibility is a bit of a mixed bag for the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio. Because Peg Perego is a well-known and established brand in Europe, most European strollers are compatible with the Primo Viaggio. Some smaller brands, however, just won’t work with the seat, even if you use an adapter.
Let’s start with the Peg Perego strollers first. Luckily, Peg Perego makes some excellent strollers and you have two options to choose from:
- The Peg Perego Booklet 50 Travel System: The Booklet comes in two colors and includes the Primo Viaggio 4/35.
- The Peg Perego YPSI Travel System: The YPSI also comes in two colors and includes the Primo Viaggio 4/35 Nido, a slightly more premium version of the seat.
Both strollers are essentially the same, but the YPSI is slightly more premium than the Booklet. It’s mostly visible through the materials that are more sturdy and expensive.
Using a Peg Perego stroller with the Primo Viaggio is very easy. You just need to place the car seat on the stroller and it will safely clip itself on it. Just press the detach levers on the sides of the seat to remove it from the stroller (the same way you would do to detach the seat from its base in your car).
If you don’t already have a stroller, we recommend that you get one of their a bundle on Amazon to save money. There is a Peg Perego Booklet 50 bundle and a Peg Perego YPSI bundle.
When it comes to other brands, you’ll just need to get the necessary adapter to pair the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio with your stroller. It can be tricky to find the adapter that’s right for your car seat, but we’ve done all the legwork for you.

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio: Accessories
The Primo Viaggio has a range of accessories from Peg Perego and third parties:
First off, if you have more than one car and expect to regularly move the seat from one to the other, you might want to get an extra base. The base is easy to install and remove, so it isn’t absolutely necessary, but it can be very helpful if, for example, you drop your baby to your parents in the morning and your partner comes to pick them up later in the day. You can get the extra base on Amazon.
The Peg Perego YPSI Travel System is another great accessory if you will often be hoping in and out your car for a quick walk or shopping. It’s a great stroller that will fit perfectly with your Primo Viaggio.
If you’re living somewhere cold or raining, you might also want to get the official Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Rain Cover to protect your baby. It’s designed with air vents on both sides to make sure that your baby has fresh air while still being protected from the weather.
